PROCEED is conducting research into public transport operations in small and medium sized cities and on how to improve its attractiveness to the users, its efficiency and effectiveness. Initially the project will map and analyse successful case cities, and this will lead to a tool for planning and delivering successful public transport.
The project will give a better understanding of the key factors that influence public transport, as well as how the position of public transport in the transport system can be strengthened so its market share can increase. PROCEED will tackle the challenges and lead to an improved expertise and an extended knowledge-base, that on one hand will help to develop, implement and assess European policy, and on the other hand will help to plan, develop and implement effective and efficient public transport (bus) systems in small and medium sized cities (between 25.000 and 200.000 inhabitants) and their surroundings all over Europe. Such provision of high quality public transport is an essential contribution to the European framework conditions supporting modal shift away from individual motorized traffic towards sustainable transport modes. PROCEED is a project under the Thematic Priority 1.6.2 Sustainable Surface Transport and the Objective 1 « New technologies and concepts for all surface transport modes (road, rail and waterborne ». PROCEED is a project based on the objectives of the call 3.1.1.1.2 Research to support the European Transport Policy and the topic High quality public transport and is therefore funded by the European Commission.
The work within PROCEED is divided into 3 different parts: All findings of these three phases will be synthesized to produce a Public Transport Guidelines for Europe which will include detailed data and trends as well as methodologies to investigate local needs and expectations, as well as the best practices identified all over Europe.
